papillons et des fleurs

I think there is something almost magical about butterflies landing on flowers. These featherweight beauties amaze me with their ability not only to not be blown away by a gust of wind, but to gracefully fly to and fro seemingly lighter than air. When I can find a butterfly resting on a bloom, it delights me and when I have my camera with me and I can capture the scene it's even better. Butterflies aren't always the easiest subject to capture - they don't sit still for long! - but I was lucky recently and was able to photograph a few real beauties.

Aren't they lovely? What could be prettier than butterflies and flowers.

light and reflections

One of the reasons Madison is a great place to call home are the lakes located right in the city. Mendota, the biggest of the lakes, provides for amazing sunrises and sunsets. Last night I snapped a few photos before the sun went down. I love how the water catches the light's rays making for ripple after ripple.

flowerful Friday

A few cut flowers from my garden placed in a Thai pitcher makes for a cheerily casual centerpiece. I love summer and that I can have flowers outdoors and indoors whenever I want!

patterned pillows

Though I do have a sewing machine, and I can do basic hems, a great seamstress I am not. I felt the need for a little challenge and as I had some beautiful Thai cloth in my possession - gifted to me by my relatives - I thought accent pillows would be a great use of these colorfully patterned fabrics. I made a pillow once in a middle school home economics class, and I think I surprised myself by remembering how to assemble the cloth to sew it so that the pillow inside can be removed. I think my husband was even more surprised when he saw my creations!

read: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

My mom recommended this book to me, and I am so thankful, because I adored it. "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" is one of those books that makes you feel for each character so greatly - you feel invested. It's cleverly co-written by an aunt and niece duo, Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. Shaffer and Barrows craft a story line comprised fully of letters and correspondences amongst the characters. It makes for such an enjoyable read and made me nostalgic for something I never really knew in my lifetime - actual news worthy letters!

I learned so much from this book; the history of Guernsey during WWII is fascinating. The authors writing captures small town island life where each character is full of spirit and often times a little bit quirky, only making them all the more endearing. When the main character, Juliet travels to Guernsey from London, the big-city girl falls in love with the island charm. Once Juliet arrives in Guernsey she recounts the experience to her friend and publisher via letter, of course. She writes, "When we drew right alongside the pier, I could see the faces of the people waiting - and then there was no going back. I knew them by their letters. There was Isola in a mad hat and purple shawl pinned with a glittering brooch. She was smiling fixedly in the wrong direction and I loved her instantly." Juliet transforms throughout the novel and becomes who she is meant to be - a true heroine.

After I read this book, I learned that it will be made into a movie, I believe it will be released this fall with Kate Winslet playing the lead. I'm excited to see the cinematic version. If you haven't read this poignant book yet, be sure to before you see the movie! Just writing about this book makes me want to read it again - it's that good.

a room reborn (again)

You might remember a blog post back in January, entitled "a room without a view". We had taken the previous owner's nursery and turned it into our "serenity room" - a room for yoga and meditation. The room has received another facelift, and I absolutely love the results!

simple and sparce,
perfect for yoga
My in-laws generously gave us a queen sized bed, so we moved the double bed that used to be in the guest room into this newly decorated room. All I bought to decorate what I'm calling "the turquoise room" was a new bed skirt, pillow shams, an accent pillow and a wall mirror for a total of $60! Everything else we had saved from previous houses and apartments. This might just be my new favorite room in the house!

a simple message

I came across this bench while exploring a corner of Olbrich Botanical Gardens here in Madison. The setting is beautifully serene and the message is simple and lovely. It says: rest here and enjoy the song of the birds and the message of the flowers. Pure poetry, if you ask me!

viva le tour!

I'm a huge fan of the Tour de France. Actually I'm a quite a Francophile and I enjoy cycling, so it's really not surprising that this 3 week long bike race is my favorite sporting event. I fell in love with the Tour ten years ago when I was lucky enough to be in Paris on the race's final day. It was an amazing scene - I had my little American flag with me to cheer for the riders from the States. As I climbed and clung onto a lamp post in order to get a better view, I snapped a photo of a memory that will last a lifetime!

light and reflections

In a matter of less than twelve hours, we had a most magnificent sunset and a subsequent sublime sunrise. I didn't "enhance" any of the colors in these photos. The dusk and dawn skies were simply breathtaking with peachy hues so perfectly lighting up a summer evening and an early summer morning. There is something about the light in these warm weather months when the day is perfectly calm that radiates warmth and serenity simultaneously.

just seconds later, blues, pinks and peaches -
like watercolors painted across

before 5:30am the sky was surreal and sublime
and just a few seconds later it changed again

flowerful Friday

Hostas provide gardens with lovely foliage in a variety of solid and variegated colors and patterns. They seem to be essential to any shade garden. Though the leaves are what hostas are usually prized for, I happen to find their flowers so pretty too. From a few almost exotic blooms, to masses of blossoms, to more restraint singular flowers - they all add another touch of beauty to a garden.

peaceful, easy feeling

There are a handful of spots in the world that that I feel more happy, more at peace, more full of life than just about anywhere else. One of these locales is laying in a hammock underneath a thick canopy of trees at my parent's house. Being there in that hammock and hearing the wind in the leaves, birds singing and the most mellow wind chimes makes for instant calm and all of the stresses of life melt away. It's a peaceful, easy feeling laying in this hammock.

grilled eggplant pasta

Another summer night, another delicious pasta dish! Tonight we had grilled eggplant with spaghetti, and it didn't disappoint. The eggplant was cubed, tossed with olive oil, salt and pepper and thrown into a grilling basket and taken outside to cook on the grill. Meanwhile the pasta was cooking and in a large bowl, I threw together minced garlic, lots of chopped basil, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Once the eggplant and pasta were finished I tossed everything together and topped the dishes with toasted bread crumbs, which added a nice crunch. With a little Sauvignon Blanc, we had a perfect little dinner in no time at all!

a perfect peach

Really good fruit is one of those little things in life that I adore. I can't tell you how many times I've bitten into a what looks like a peach to only taste a pithy, juiceless, flavorless piece of mush pretending to be a peach. At the grocery, peaches were proudly displayed and though I've been fooled so many times in the past, I had to give this crop of peaches a try. What a pleasant surprise - when I bit into this peach my mouth was delighted! It was perfectly peachy in every way a peach should be.
finally...a perfect peach!

a little gardener

I've written before about how I've loved gardening and flowers ever since I can remember. They've been a continual theme at almost every stage of my life. My mom found some photos in an old album of when we lived in Louisville, Kentucky. It was 1981, and I was a mere 3 years old. Funny how it's now 30 years later, and I still spend my time the same way!

busy bees

It may be Sunday, but there was no rest for the many bees I spotted in my garden today. With their heads buried in flowers these busy bees seemed to enjoy their very important business of pollinating!

light and reflections

I took this extreme close up photo of Nino, my ginger tom, while we were relaxing out on our screened-in porch. I think it's both of our favorite spot. There's something about the way his whiskers catch the light that I find so delightful.

flowerful Friday

One of my favorite parts of having a garden is being able to bring beautiful blooms indoors. I put together a bouquet of coneflowers aka Echinanea, daisies, snapdragons, and tall sprigs of mint. It smells so fresh, and I love the look - very summer casual, don't you think?

herbal beauty

Of course herbs lend so much to the kitchen, but sometimes I forget just how beautiful they are in the garden or a flower arrangement too. I snapped a few photos in my herb garden - aren't they just lovely?

bloom and grow

My vegetable garden is coming along quite nicely. We've had a stretch of hot days which we needed since this spring was so cool for so long. While I eagerly await juicy tomatoes, crunchy bell peppers, and tender eggplants I'm making do with enjoying the cute blossoms of so many of my vegetables. Seeing these little flowers is so encouraging - where there are blooms there will soon be veggies! It's nice to see all of these plants blooming and growing a little more every day.
