The joint album, In the Heart of the Moon, by music superstars Ali Farke Toure and Toumani Diabate is one of my top albums ever. I never tire of listening to the album's completely enchanting songs. Here they perform "Debe". One word for you: sublime. Enjoy!

the best medicine
Is there anything better than laughter? It's contagious in the best possible way.
I love this photo. I don't know who took it, I don't know who this adorable little girl is, and I don't know if it's even possible for camels to laugh. Regardless, I absolutely think it's one of my favorite photos of all time. It makes me so happy.

flowerful friday
Without a doubt, one part of having a garden that I find most enjoyable is being able to bring in freshly cut flowers straight from the yard for us to enjoy. With spring flowers in full bloom, my latest bouquet is one of my favorites for its variety of colors and textures and a rather old-fashioned look.

poem in your pocket day
Did you know that today is national Poem In Your Pocket day? It's a way for us to share our favorite poetry with each other. Here's one I quite like:
To A Butterfly
by William Wordsworth
I've watched you now a full half-hour,
Self-poised upon that yellow flower;
And, little butterfly! indeed
I know not if you sleep or feed.
How motionless! And then
What joy awaits you, when the breeze
Has found you out among the trees,
And calls you forth again!
This plot of orchard-ground is ours;
My trees they are, my sister's flowers;
Here rest your wings when they are weary,
Here lodge as in a sanctuary!
Come often to us, fear no wrong;
Sit near us on the bough!
We'll talk of sunshine and of song,
And summer days, when we are young;
Sweet childish days, that were as long
As twenty days are now.

a uniting feature: Rothko, Hirst, and Monet
These three paintings are quite different in subject matter and style; however, they caught my eyes as having a uniting feature -- the artists' bold and ingenious use of color.
Mark Rothko's No. 8 from 1952 with gorgeous golden hues.
Damien Hirst's "Valium" from 2000. Intense to say the least.
Monet's "Path Under the Rose Trellises" from 1924. Shockingly similar colors as what Hirst uses above.

a springtime stroll
Join me on a short walk through the UW Arboretum. We'll see beautiful flowering crabapple trees, lilac bushes, and more. Don't forget to turn the audio up so you can hear all of the birds singing too!

inspired by lilacs
You could say that I'm in lilac state of mind. They are my favorite flowers, and as you all know, there isn't a flower out there that I don't love! Here's three paintings that capture the beauty of lilacs, each in a different way which reflects each artist's style.
Claude Monet, "Lilacs Grey Weather" -- 1873 |
Vincent Van Gogh, "Lilac Bush" -- 1889 |
David Burliuk, "Lilacs in the Park" -- painting date unknown Burliuk (1882-1967) |

flowerful friday
Here in the Midwest, it's that time of year when lilacs are taking center stage, and their incomparable beauty and scent is everywhere! Stay tuned for a bigger selection of lilac photos. But, here's a shot I took of lilacs just about to reach full bloom.
Happy Friday!

this sums it up
I'm back home after a busy few days away for work and to top things off, I have a nasty stomach bug that has rendered me exhausted. This little fellow looks just like I feel. Though he's much cuter! Here's hoping tomorrow will be a better day.

music for a monday morning: amadou and mariam's "la realite"
Mali's international power duo, Amadou and Mariam brighten up even the dreariest of Monday mornings. They sing in their native French, but even if you can't understand the lyrics, their songs' spellbinding beats will hopefully catch your interest. And, I think you'll agree they're a perfect example of not needing sight to have vision. Here's their song, La Realite.

a cat, a dog and a toy horse?
I don't know if this photo could possibly be real, regardless of possible inauthenticity, it makes me laugh out loud with its funny cast of characters. Aren't the cat and dog adorable? Their expressions are perfect!

inspired by gardens
I never seem to tire of seeing gardens and being inspired by beautiful garden spaces both near and far. What better way to get ideas for my own garden? Whenever I travel, I am drawn towards lush green spaces and flowers, and when I'm home I try to make time for enjoying the beautiful gardens here in Madison.

cherry trees in blossom
I absolutely love this painting, by the Russian artist Victor Borisov-Musatov, entitled Cherry Trees in Blossom. I think the colors are so perfectly "springy".

good friends are like stars
Wouldn't you agree, there's nothing quite like a good friend? I found this saying on Pinterest and think that it's quite lovely. It made me think of all of my dear friends - now scattered around the world - and how lucky I am to have them all in my life.
Here's my little homage to friends. I found all of these photos on Pinterest as well.

words to live by...
I like everything about this quote and image - the message, the colors and the script. The words are Oscar Wilde's, and I found the image on Pinterest and don't know who to give credit to for the design.

music for a monday morning: iron and wine, a npr tiny desk concert
If you're not familiar with NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, then you're in for a treat. And, if you're not familiar with Iron and Wine's Sam Beam then you are in for a double treat. Beam's songwriting is incredibly lyrical - he paints beautiful stories for listeners to enjoy. His performance at NPR Tiny Desk Concerts showcased Beam's gorgeous solo acoustic work. Enjoy!

inspired by Tissot and Monet
The paintings by Tissot and Monet that I posted recently inspired me. I was walking through the Arboretum here in Madison this morning, and this scene captured my eye. It reminded me so much of the setting of both Tissot's and Monet's paintings. Can't you imagine an artist painting this spring scene?

Tissot's "Spring"
This painting, appropriately named "Spring", is by the French realist painter James Tissot. Tissot was friends with his more famous Impressionist counterparts - Degas, Monet, and Manet. And, though I love Impressionism, I really do enjoy Tissot's work, which often portrays fancily dressed women in beautiful surroundings. Doesn't Tissot's painting below, capture spring so very nicely?
