Lately, I've been working on organizing travel photos. It's been a pleasure to cull through the many, many photos that my husband and I have taken on our trips together. Here are a few snapshots from a handful of my favorite spots. What happy memories!
In order these are from Boulder, Ildiri, Granada, Vieques, and Chiusi.

details, details everywhere (part 3)
Here's my 3rd (and final, I think) installment of the "details, details everywhere" posts recollecting the ornate art and decor of Andalucia. So far we looked at the amazing details given to the ground and how the paths, courtyards, floors were all adorned. Next we saw photos of eye-level surfaces - walls so heavily decorated with beautifully detailed tile. And now we turn to the ceilings above and see perhaps the most intricate designs and shapes yet. I think it makes sense - the builders of these grand buildings: palaces, churches, mosques, and museums probably held the view that since these ceilings were closest to the heavens then they should reflect that proximity and be nothing but the most extraordinary examples beauty.

details, details everywhere (part 2)
In continuing with my "details, details everywhere" posts about the amazingly ornate and rich decor of Southern Spain, I'm turning my attention away from the ground beneath our feet (very lucky feet get the opportunity to walk across such beautifully decorated ground!) to the walls at eye level. Spanish tile, like so much in Southern Spain, is heavily influenced by the Moorish presence in that area from 711 to 1492. I'm not a "numbers person", but those are 2 dates that just are so easy to remember! Just because the Moors were forced out (granted, some Moors assimilated, but this isn't meant to be a lesson in the re- Catholicization of Spain) didn't mean their design and aesthetic was lost. Thankfully, because the Moors, in my opinion, had excellent design taste!
Sometimes geometric, sometimes curvilinear, always colorful and always a bit mesmerizing, these tiles are works of art and they adorn so many of the walls in palaces, fortresses, and even more humble buildings. I find the use of color to be completely inspirational and believe decorators the world over have been gleaning from these palates. And, how ingenious to use cool tiles on walls in a locale where the summer temperatures, I hear, can be blistering hot. It's a marriage of form and function!

details, details everywhere (part 1)
A recent trip to Andalucia made a lasting impression on me - the amount of detail and embellishment everywhere is not easily forgotten. The traditional decor and design in southern Spain is certainly not one of minimalism, and its curvilinear charm left its mark in my memory. I found the ornate features that could be seen on ceilings, walls, and the ground below so attractive. As I had never seen so much attention give to the ground below, I could be seen with my camera pointed downwards, snapping photos of the streets, sidewalks, and courtyard floors.

candid in Cordoba
I love it when I can capture a "real-life" scene while on vacation. I took this picture in Cordoba, Spain this past November. I remember hearing the bikes, turning around, and quickly snapping this with my camera. I feel so lucky that the photo turned out. These two kids, probably on their way home from school, were as cute as cute can be. Check out the little girl's eye glasses - coordinating perfectly with her Adidas track pants. Throw in those pigtails, and what a look...love it! I thoroughly enjoyed watching these two. I wonder what kind of delicious treat was waiting for them at home...
