the beauty of the season {autumn}

Today was a gorgeous fall day - a bright blue sky contrasted with the leaves that are starting to show their lovely autumnal colors. Here are some photos that perfectly showcase the beauty of the season.

to autumn {john keats}

                                            1.
    SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
        Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
    Conspiring with him how to load and bless
        With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
    To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
        And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
            To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
    With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
        And still more, later flowers for the bees,
        Until they think warm days will never cease,
            For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

                                            2.
    Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
        Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
    Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
        Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
    Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep,
        Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
            Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
    And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
        Steady thy laden head across a brook;
        Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
            Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

                                            3.
    Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
        Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—
    While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
        And touch the stubble plains with rosy hue;
    Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
        Among the river sallows, borne aloft
            Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
    And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
        Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
        The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
           And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

flowerful friday

At the local farmers' market last Saturday, dahlias, sunflowers, and gladiolas were in gorgeous, full bloom. I picked up some beautiful dahlias for home (at a great price nonetheless!), and I snapped these colorful images. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's farmers' market to see what delightful early-fall flora might be available.

Andrew Bird will be performing here in Madison on Wednesday evening. I can't wait. I'm sure it's going to be another amazing live show. Here's just a glimpse of his new album, "Hands of Glory". Enjoy!

colors of the season {from a farmers' market}

Fall was definitely in the air yesterday, and while taking in the Dane County Farmers' Market the temperatures were cool, seasonal specialities like apples, pears, and squash were everywhere, and many vendors were selling lovely dried flowers bouquets. Here are a few shots I snapped that capture the colors of the season.

flowerful friday: special edition - inspirational gardens

Today's Flowerful Friday post looks at a few photos of gardens that I find amazingly gorgeous. They are so well designed, and they range from structured modern to bucolic bliss. Wouldn't it be nice to travel to these locations and wander through these spaces in real life and get lost in each garden's unique setting and beauty? For now I'll be sticking to looking at these stunning settings, dreaming, and getting little pieces of inspiration for my own little garden. By the way, you can click onto these images for a larger view. Do you have a favorite?

Happy Friday!

stripes: black and white {photography}

The boldness of black and white stripes combined with the crispness of black and white photography creates such a beautiful dichotomy, a timeless combination. From Audrey Hepburn in a simple striped shirt to her as Eliza Doolittle in a beautifully elaborate costume from "My Fair Lady". From zebra stripes to stripes found in more everyday object and scenes. Gladly, black and white stripes are here to stay.

colorful coleus

While lots of our summer blooms are starting to fade in color, the foliage of coleus still provides so much colorful variety. I snapped these photos while on a walk around our neighborhood.

There's also this beauty "Coleus in a Flower Pot" by Van Gogh, which perfectly captures the color variegation of a coleus plant.

music for a monday morning: ballaké sissoko and vincent segal's "mako mady"

The kora and the cello, two of my favorite instruments, here combined to make pure musical bliss. The  richness of the cello is perfectly balanced with the more delicate and light kora. Ballaké Sissoko, Malian kora superstar and French cellist, Vincent Segal come together and create stunning cross-cultural music. Just watch these two - they are amazing. Enjoy!

{baked} honeycrisp apples

Happily, honeycrisp apples are back in season. I sliced one up and baked it at 225F for about an hour and a half (turning them once 1/2 way through). Their delicious fragrance filled our home - it was the lovely smell of early fall.

just fruit - perfectly sweet and crisp!

smile: photography in black and white

I came across this adorable photograph on Pinterest recently, and every time I see it, it makes me smile. I love the  expressions of both the little boy and the dog. Just look at the dog's eyes! What do you think he's thinking?

flowerful friday {shades of blue}

Blue flowers aren't that common, and they always add a nice element of surprise to a garden. In my garden, we can see purplish-blue pansies, baby blue morning glory, and sky blue borage.

plant your {victory} garden

As I've gotten to be a better gardener, my small garden has produced more than I ever thought it would! Learning to know what to plant, where to plant, and how often to plant to really start maximizing produce has been an incredibly interesting and rewarding process. Having a small garden is increasingly popular - whether gardens are grown for purposes of health, finances, or recreation - having a garden is a wonderful way to enjoy fresh home-grown vegetables.

Here are some beautiful, colorful victory garden posters from WWII. Their imagery and messages still ring true.

happy adoption day nino!

Today we celebrate 6 years of having Nino in our lives! Back then Nino was teeny 4lb kitty with a few health problems. Now Nino has a clean bill of health and fills his days running, jumping, watching the birds, chipmunks, and squirrels, and of course, sleeping! He's the most snuggly kitty I've ever known and he brings a smile to our faces each an everyday.

I was thinking about all of my closest friends and how they all have pets that enrich their lives. Rooni, Kaia, Milly, and Ellie - you all are so great!  If you're on the fence about adopting a pet, I can't even express how much adopting an animal brings to one's life.

Happy adoption day Nino Clementino! You are so loved.
