This orange beauty was a birthday present from a friend. I love the bright and cheery color.

springtime's flowering branches
I'm itching for springtime - warmer days filled with bulbs poking up through the ground, birds chirping, and flowering trees and their beautiful branches. It's so nice to cut a few to bring indoors.

music for a monday: npr's tiny desk concert -- Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal
Two of my favorite instruments, the kora and the cello, here played in a small little NPR office space by the incomparable Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal. Sit back, relax, watch and listen as these two masters perform. Enjoy!

flowerful friday: hydrangea
My husband brought home the loveliest bouquet of hydrangeas a week or so ago. With their flowerheads full of paper-thin petals, they lent a little burst of summer to our home. Here's a close-up of one I snapped.
Hydrangeas are native to southern and eastern Asia and the Americas. I can't wait for the hydrangeas in our garden to bloom.
Happy Friday!

a picture speaks a thousand words
I came across this photo on Pinterest, and I think it's stunning. I love this boy's peaceful expression. Isn't it beautiful? Do you remember listening to the ocean in a shell when you were little? Wasn't that a wonderful sensation?

heliophilia: an attraction to sunlight
Like the sunflower, I think I have a case of heliophilia, an attraction to sunlight. Thankfully the sun is out this morning, and hopefully it will stay out for us today! We've had enough grey days lately.

flowerful friday: tulips
I bought a few beautiful tulip stems recently to bring a little color and feeling of spring indoors. Did you know that tulip commercial cultivation began in the Ottoman Empire, or what's now Turkey?

color therapy: yellow
Today was one of those days that the sun is nowhere to be found. With rain, fog, and grey everywhere to be seen, I thought photos of beautiful yellow hues might just add some much needed brightness to the day.

flowerful friday: hyacinth
Native to the eastern Mediterranean and southwestern Asia, the hyacinth is a flower many of us associate with early spring. I forced one hyacinth bulb inside, and its fragrant flowers provide a showy burst burst of color. I can't wait to see the hyacinths in my garden poke through the soil - hopefully it won't be too long.
Happy Friday!

from the kitchen: spinach, artichoke, chickpea dip
This winter we've been eating a lot of vegetarian dishes at home. My spinach, artichoke, chickpea dip is super easy and incredibly flavorful, and makes a great snack. What's nice too is that these are items we often just have on hand, so there's no need to make a special run to the grocery.
Ingredients:
1 can artichokes
about 1/2 cup frozen spinach, thawed
about 1/4 cup chickpeas
juice of 1/2 lemon
about 1/4 cup of good olive oil
about 1/2 teaspoon each of turmeric and curry powder
pinches of salt and pepper
cilantro to dress, if desired

day dreaming...vegetable garden
I don't know about you, but I'm ready for winter to be over. I've been day dreaming about getting out into my garden and start the growing season. Since we just got another big snowfall yesterday, it seems like gardening might not be in my very near future, so day dreaming will just have to suffice! Here are a few beautiful photos I found on Pinterest that inspire me.
