international women's day

So as you know, this blog focuses on the "little things in life", well, today will take a slight diversion and look at something more substantial, because today is International Women's Day. With its roots in the suffrage movement and equal rights for women, it is an official holiday in many of the world's countries. March 8, 2011 was the 100th anniversary of this occasion, and though the US doesn't officially recognize this holiday, last year, President Obama marked March as Women's History Month - a month to reflect on "the extraordinary accomplishments of women" in shaping our country's history.

If you'd like to learn more about International Women's Day, please take a look at this website: http://www.internationalwomensday.com/

Also, here are some beautifully moving photos from IWD, all from Reuters (which happens to be part of the company I proudly work for!).

Just think - women in the US didn't have the right to vote until 1920! Let us give thanks for women like Susan B. Anthony, Alice Stone Blackwell, Carrie Chapman Catt, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth for paving the road for all us that followed. And more recently, Gloria Steinem who  has been the most significant force in modern day women's issues. Here's a link to an interview with Steinem that is very on point for current events.

Who are the women you consider role models? My list is long and includes my mom, my grandmothers and aunts, former professors, and colleagues, but I know without a doubt, a recent addition to my list is Sandra Fluke. She's got brains, chutzpah, and common sense. I'm so proud of her, and I hope she becomes an inspiration for all women to speak up and have their voices heard.
